Uptodown-id Fighting Resumes in Aleppo
Fighting returned Sunday to the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, after a three-day humanitarian pause. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported air strikes, ground offensives and shelling. The British monitor said there were clashes in several areas of the ancient city along the front that divides the government-held west from the eastern section of the city. The monitor said Syrian or Russian air strikes have also resumed. A rebel group has warned civilians to keep away from government areas ahead of an expected rebel offensive on the contested city. Medical evacuations postponed The United Nations was forced to postpone planned medical evacuations Friday in the eastern part of Aleppo because security assurances were not given by groups fighting in the city. The United Nations says about 250,000 civilians are in desperate need of supplies in eastern Aleppo and hundreds more who urgently need medical care need to be evacuated. U.N. and Red Cross trucks packed with supplies have been sitting near the Turkish border for weeks, awaiting guarantees they can safely deliver relief supplies. As part of the short-lived truce, Syrian and Russian forces opened up eight corridors civilians could use to safely exit the city. Two of the corridors were for rebel fighters who wanted to lay down their weapons and flee. Media reports say the corridors were little used by either civilians of the rebels.
