Uptodown-id Suicide Bombers Hit 2 Targets in Northern Iraq; 16 People Dead
A suicide attack on an Iranian-run construction site in the town of Dibis in northern Iraq Friday killed 16 people, while no casualties were reported after a similar earlier attack on a police compound in the city of Kirkuk. During that attack, several explosions were heard coming from the police compound and gunbattles followed shortly after. Video footage aired on a local television station showed black smoke rising from the compound and automatic gunfire could be heard in the background. According to one Kurdish intelligence officer, four suicide bombers attacked the main police headquarters, but one of them was shot dead by police before he managed to explode his suicide vest. The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack. Kirkuk Governor Najmadin Karim was quoted by the Kurdish television station Rudaw as saying the militants had not seized any government buildings and no casualties were reported. Several hours later, the French News Agency reports that three suicide bombers made their way into a power plant under construction near the town of Dibis, about 40 kilometers northwest of Kirkuk, and blew themselves up, killing 16 people. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the second attack.
